State of Maharashtra formed on May 1, 1960, inclusive of 26 Districts. Initially on June 3, 1956, region of Maharashtra was declared as Union Territory for five years. Maharashtra is divided into following 6 regions Marathwada, Konkan, Vidarbha, Vidarbha-Varhadi, Khandesh & Paschim Maharashtra. Vidarbha is bifurcated as Varhadi & Vidarbha and Paschim Maharashtra region is known as Desh/ Maharashtra Desh.


All 23 Governors of Andhra State / Andhra Pradesh

After establishment as a separate state, Andhra Pradesh has been served by 23 Governers. C. M. Trivedi was the first Governor of Initially formed ‘Andhra State’ on October 1, 1953 and he also possessed the office on its reintroduction as ‘Andhra Pradesh. Smt. Sharada Mukerjee was named as first woman Governor of Andhra Pradesh. As a Governor, the longest term of 3496 days (almost 9.5 years) at Andhra Pradesh is occupied by Ekkadu Srinivasan Lakshmi Narasimhan. He witnessed the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh into ‘Telangana’ & newly formed ‘Andhra Pradesh’. Therefore, he served both States from June 2, 2014 to July 23, 2019.


13 Districts & headquarters-Andhra Pradesh, India

A distinct part of Telugu speaking areas, from Madras State, formed as ‘Andhra State’ a separate State on October 1, 1953. Newly formed Andhra state possessed 11 districts in the Telugu-speaking portion of Madras State and chosen Kurnool as the capital.


New list of States and Union Territories of India

Since the independence from British, the boundaries of the Indian states kept changing regularly. Around 1947, India was known as a territory of 565 princely states and 17 provinces. In 1956, the transforming habitat settled over reorganization of 14 states and 6 union territories, which was rearranged into 29 states and 7 union territories towards 2014. After bifurcation of Jammu & Kashmir, in 2019, India got two new union territories in the name of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir. Furthermore, two territories (Dadra & Nagar Haveli + Daman & Diu) merged in the beginning of 2020.

Establishment of 5 Zonal Councils of India.

To promote interstate co-operations, Parliament of India established Zonal councils. Under the States Reorganization Act, 1956─ each Zonal Council is combined from a group of Indian States. Zonal Councils are known as statutory/ deliberative/ advisory bodies, hence, they are not constitutional bodies. Therefore, Union Territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands & Lakshadweep are not member of any Zonal Council.
